Palm Aire Country Club was built in 1959. when George Palmer and Harold Broiler founded The Palms Golf Course. Shortly thereafter, in 1962, they opened a small lodge. Golf-Fever emerged with the rise of golf matches shown on network TV, and “location, location, location” brought professional golfers like Sam Snead to the course.
In 1965, the Orleans family purchased the Palms Golf Course along with the lodge. A few years later a hotel and spa were added. Two more golf courses were added by 1972 bringing much attention to the area, as harness racing at Pompano Park—known to the likes of Frank Sinatra, and friends as The Pomp—began in 1964. Celebrities from Hollywood and professional sports came to play golf, enjoy the weather, and frequent the racetrack.
Little by little, the community’s 13 HOAs were planted amid The Palms, Oaks, and Cypress courses. The whole community thrived as new residents, snowbirds, and golfers from beginners to professionals made use of amenities including tennis courts, two fully stocked golf shops, two driving ranges, and a professional golf academy.
Palm Aire residences were built in stages beginning in the late 1960’s through the mid 1980’s. Conveniently located just 20 minutes from Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International airport, and just 10 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean, the condominiums, patio homes, townhouses, single-family homes, and rentals were a huge hit with snowbirds, transplants, and natives. Part of the
success of the development was the green space, which was and is visible from every single unit on the site. Everyone in Palm Aire has a golf course view!
That view was part of the thinking that went into the 1985 agreement, which limited the development to 10,631 units total…in perpetuity. THAT is the Palm Aire every owner in our community purchased. That is the Palm Aire we are watching over and fighting to preserve. It’s not an exclusive way of life. It’s a wide-open green space with a public greenway and a public park serving the community.
Saving Palm Aire is just one aspect of preserving open, green space in the City of Pompano Beach.
